2014-10-16 Model Andreja Pejic cuddles up to Jean Paul Gaultier at his new exhibition in her first public appearance since transitioning into a woman

Andreja, who was born a male named Andrej, showed off her bright smile during the first preview of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.

She flaunted her pins in a short but sweet black, beige and turquoise frock, featuring a small cut-out panel.

Her golden tresses were styled in voluminous curls, highlighting her soft face and signature eyebrows.

Pointed nude heels kept the model's feet looking stylish and served as her only accessory, with no jewellery to be seen.

Jean Paul looked cool in black as he celebrated the preview of his new exhibition which features more than 140 superbly crafted garments spanning his lengthy career.

Some of the works of art include incredibly intricate leopard print frocks and white, tasselled floor length skirts.

New chapter: This is her first public appearance since she underwent gender reassignment surgery earlier this year to become a woman

It's set to be a big year for the former creative director of Hermès with a new role on Australia's Next Top Model.

It was announced on Tuesday that the 62-year-old would appear as a celebrity judge on the popular reality program hosted by Jennifer Hawkins.

The respected designer has a close friendship with Andreja and helped throw her into the spotlight.

At Paris Fashion Week in 2011, Andreja walked the catwalk for Jean Paul's men's collection as well as his women's collection.

At the time she publicly identified as androgynous but since transitioning earlier this year she plans to focus solely on womenswear.

Oh dear: She pulled a funny expression, possibly showing distaste for an outfit

In a Reddit AMA last month she told one of her fans she 'definitely had fun with androgyny' but 'will only be modelling as a female.'

Then she added: 'But if the shoot is really creative and amazing, and they want to put me in a suit, I would be open to it if it's tasteful. But I probably won't be doing it on a scale like before.'

In a touching response to another admirer the cover girl revealed what she thinks people misunderstand most about transgender people today.

'I would say the fact that we are human beings like anyone else, and we strive to have happy and fulfilling lives, like anyone else,' she wrote.

'And that we are like everybody else.'

Andreja is just one of many individuals paving the way for acceptance and change with Orange Is The New Black's Laverne Cox and RuPaul's Drag Race star Carmen Carrera just some of the transgender stars in the spotlight.

Andreja is currently working on a Kickstarter campaign for her documentary Andrej(A).

As of Thursday it has 260 backers and has raised over $44,000 with a new goal of $100,000 by Sunday.

The film is about the supermodel and her 'transformative journey to womanhood and her mission to pass courage on to the next generation.'

In a promo video the blonde beauty introduces herself by saying: 'at birth I was assigned a gender, they told me I was a boy, I am a woman.'
