2014-10-16 Andreja Pejic makes her first public appearance as a woman in Melbourne in surprise for designer Jean Paul Gaultier

AUSTRALIAN supermodel Andreja Pejic has jetted into Melbourne to surprise designer Jean Paul Gaultier on the eve of the opening of his glamour exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The formerly androgynous male model is making her first public appearance as a woman after undergoing gender transition surgery three months ago.

Pejic, who came to fame when Gaultier selected her to walk in both his men’s and women’s shows in 2011, is one of seven Australian muses to have influenced the theatrical French designer and is part of the exhibition.

“It’s crazy, I never thought I’d see the day that my image would be in a gallery,” Pejic says.

“I feel extremely lucky, taking into consideration that I am a trans woman and come from one of the most disadvantaged minorities.”

Gaultier was thrilled by the surprise and eager to welcome the statuesque stunner home from New York.

“I was wondering what they were showing me, telling me something had just arrived from New York,” Gaultier says.

“But it is not something, it is someone wonderful.”

It is Pejic’s first visit home since becoming a woman and she is looking forward to seeing her brother and extended family who have not seen her since the surgery.

“It feels good, it feels more right. I just feel very lucky to come back here and to be welcome back,” she says.

After stepping away from modelling for a few months Pejic is looking forward to returning to work, but says she is planning on taking her career in a different direction.

“I’m very proud of what I have achieved, I’ve had a great avant-garde and out there career,” she says.

“But everyone in the public eye has to keep reinventing themselves. It’s time for me to be more chic and classic, to work as a woman and to prove my capabilities to do what the other big girls do.”

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From Sidewalk to Catwalk runs from Oct. 17-Feb 8 at the National Gallery of Victoria.
