2014-7-26 S&M: Pejic a role “model” for men, women – for us all

The post questioned Pejic’s “eligibility” to identify as a woman.

Initially I wasn’t going to publicise the story because the subject matter pertains to a very personal and private matter that has nothing to do with me, but after seeing the lack of respect and knowledge shown by people after Pejic’s decision to go public with her story, I cant help but open my mouth because this is bigger than me and it’s bigger than Andreja.

I first became aware of Andreja early in 2011 during her rocket to fame as the “Boy from Broadmeadows” in Melbourne who closed Gaultier in a gown and posed nude for Steven Meisel, emanating strength and confidence and a comfort in her own skin that both baffled and beckoned me.

The world and I became obsessed in an instant, but for very different reasons.

I think my story can help people. My goal is to give a human face to this struggle, and I feel like I have a responsibility…

The media always seemed to be interested less in the achievements in her career and more in her sexual preferences or gender identity, both of which she remained quiet about. For me, personally, seeing her succeed as she was, in a world extremely negative and non-accepting of anyone or anything “different,”  just made everything make sense.

It made it better.

Her very being in the fashion world, a world in which I very much wanted to be accepted, was a lot, but her acceptance into mainstream society cemented a shift in the world of the understanding of something more than male or female, black or white. Reading her interview with Style.com, it was apparent that’s exactly why she chose to make her transition public – “I think my story can help people. My goal is to give a human face to this struggle, and I feel like I have a responsibility.”

Pejic goes on to discuss her understanding of her identity at a young age and what she now, as a woman, asks of the world.

“I would like them to understand that we are people. We’re human beings, and this is a human life. This is reality for us, and all we ask for is acceptance and validation for what we say that we are. It’s a basic human right.”

I hope for the day where this will be a non-issue and with that I want to thank Andreja for bringing her story to the fore where the uneducated can learn about what it is to truly be a woman.

2014-10-27 Down Under is a Wrap! Let's reach our $100,000 Stretch Goal

Yesterday we met with a group of amazing young people from Uni High in Melbourne where Andreja went to high school. See attached pic! We were so touched and blown away by their grasp of gender and sexuality. Andreja's story is inspiring people around the globe and, in the end, that's what we hope to accomplish.

Got a few video and content surprises coming up in the next few days, including a video from our new friends at minus18 https://minus18.org.au/ and special message from Andreja's mother and grandmother. So please stay tuned.

2014-10-16 Andreja and Eric in Australia!

Hey Everyone!

Eric here.

Australia's prodigal daughter, Andreja, has returned home with me in tow and what a couple of days its been so far!

Right now we are in Melbourne for the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit. It's an absolutely gorgeous show.  Andreja being here was a surprise for Jean Paul and the reunion of Jean Paul with his muse, Andreja, was a beautiful moment to behold.  Captured all on film for our doc, of course.

We've only been here for a few days but just so many amazing moments with Jean Paul and Andreja's family and friends.  And so much support for Andreja's transition from everyone!  In fact, I just finished interviewing Joseph, the scout who discovered Andreja working at a local McDonalds.

The press here is so enthralled by Andreja's story and tomorrow morning Andreja will be appearing on Australia's two top morning shows, Sunrise and Today.  Below is a pic of her being interviewed by Today, well, today at the exhibit.

I specifically want to reach out to the trans youth over here who have been inspired by Andreja's courage.  The stories I am hearing from various people are so inspirational.  I want to hear more.  Contact us!  Your voices are so important for this film.

Finally, the Australian people have been so welcoming. Thanks, Australia! And special thanks to the National Gallery of Victoria for being so welcoming. We are here for a few more weeks and I cant wait to film all of the people who have played a role in her life thus far.

2014-9-17 Transgender model Andreja Pejic opens up✍

Those are the forthright words of a woman who as a child had to deal with the daily emotional stress of “fighting everything that comes naturally 24 hours a day, seven days a week”.

At age 13, Pejic, whose family moved from the Balkans to Australia, searched the internet to find out why the so-called “passing phase” of wearing skirts and wanting long hair wasn’t going away. At 14, she even went to a doctor who explained that she was too young to begin the transitioning process.

For the time being, Pejic, who is signed to Storm Model Management, was forced to escape reality and the occasional childish taunt of “poofter” through her imagination: “I would dream about going to the store with my mum or dating the cutest boy at school – quite mundane things actually but for me they were the biggest dreams.”

後來,Pejic簽進了Storm模特公司,was forced to escape reality and the occasional childish taunt of “poofter” through her imagination: "我夢想跟媽媽逛街和全校最可愛的男孩約會-這些事情很平凡,但對我來說是很大的夢想。"

Pejic says that she was “lucky to have an early intervention” from both professionals and an understanding mother but admits that had this not been the case, she, like many of the trans community, might have suffered from depression and contemplated suicide.

Indeed, it’s a group of society that often suffers in silence due to social ignorance and social distrust. “I don’t think that we’re at a level where the media completely understands it: they need to focus more on the emotional aspects of transition rather than the physical. At least now transgender people can talk back to the media, which before they have been denied.”

The 23-year-old continues: “You should perceive people as they say they are and feel, instead of judging them on their body. We don’t look down at our body to determine who we are.”

The sense of misunderstanding amongst the public also permeates into the fashion world. It’s an institution that has been slow to embrace diversity, in any sense of the word. “The problem is that it’s very conservative, market-driven and there’s discrimination, too,” says the model.

It’s an institution that has been slow to embrace diversity, in any sense of the word."問題是一切還是很保守,市場的走向還有著歧視,這位模特說。

Fashion, or more specifically, its commercial side such as cosmetics isn’t ready to take the perceived risk of a trans model to front a potentially multi-billion dollar campaign.

But there are signs now that the industry is beginning to awaken to the transgender spectrum with the rise of Givenchy muse Lea T, while May Simon and Stav Strashko are doing the rounds at the ongoing fashion weeks. “I think society is ready but fashion needs to get with it – it’s happening,” argues Pejic.

They’re the words of an activist who is spreading awareness through an autobiographical book, which will be published through Penguin in Australia early next year, and a documentary of her sex reassignment surgery.

Although Pejic was originally unsure about filming her transition, her filmmaker friend Eric Miclette encouraged her, saying, “You need to capture this, you’ll regret it if you don’t. It’s a unique story and it can help a lot of young people.” The film, entitled “Andrej(a)", is looking to raise $200,000 on crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter.

Pejic is proud of what she has achieved to-date and is keen to stress that the SRS is part of “an evolution and not a transformation”. It’s a process that she now feels is complete. “I feel 100 percent confident,” she chirps.

she chirps.

On the question of whether her love life is better as a woman, she coyly giggles, “I’m single at the moment but it’s definitely more fun when you’re comfortable with yourself.” Pejic adds:  “I’ve been off the dating scene for a while but I’m open to love. I used to think that love wasn’t something I was deserving of, but now I have enough pride to say that it’s exactly what I deserve.”
